Choosing Between Commercial-Grade and Consumer-Grade Monitors

For new businesses or franchising businesses, the task of deciding between commercial-grade monitors vs. consumer-grade monitors can be quite daunting, especially if the business owner’s knowledge of technology is quite limited. On the surface, it may seem like the two displays are the same, but there are a few subtle yet crucial differences that make one more suitable than the other for professional settings. Most businesses will benefit more from using commercial- vs. consumer-grade monitors because they are much more business-friendly.

Commercial-Grade Monitors vs. Consumer-Grade Monitors

There are a few differences between commercial and consumer monitors that mostly have to do with their engineering, although commercial monitors also possess highly superior physical qualities that are preferable in business environments.

Commercial-Grade Monitors

One of the main advantages of using commercial- vs. consumer-grade monitors for any business is that the former is specifically designed and constructed to withstand the high demands of your corporation whereas the latter is not. Commercial LED displays come equipped with the following features that guarantee the durability, stamina, and security required of a high-end screen:

Built-in, burn-in prevention: This allows the screen to be used for longer than eight hours on end, which is standard for most businesses, without fading or burning out over time.

VESA Mount Compatibility: VESA is the standard mounting option in the industry and it is compatible with all commercial-grade monitors, but not all consumer-grade monitors and this can be very problematic for businesses.

Higher Nits: Commercial monitors can be used both indoors and outdoors without brightness, or lack thereof, being an issue because they usually have anywhere from 300 to 1000 nits whereas consumer monitors typically have approximately 300 nits, which is only ideal for indoor use.

Stronger Chassis: Because commercial monitors are specifically intended to endure harsher use, they are usually more robustly built.

Consumer-Grade Monitors

At first, it may seem like consumer-grade monitors are the more affordable option, but they might actually end up costing you more in repairs later on. Keep in mind that these monitors are not necessarily built for long-term use, and they certainly are not built of the same high caliber to overcome high-volume commercial environments like commercial-grade monitors are.

Consumer-grade monitors work great in more relaxed settings, like your living room at home, where they will not be in constant use upwards of eight hours a day, causing them to overheat and potentially present a safety hazard. They are simply not as heavy-duty as commercial-grade monitors, meaning they will need to be repaired or replaced far more frequently. This is time-consuming and cost-prohibitive for your business.

Another downfall of consumer-grade screens is that manufacturers tend to openly brandish their company logo in plain view right on the bottom of the screen. This can be very distracting to the eye and, to be completely honest, it looks tacky in a professional location. In the end, you are much better off investing in commercial-grade monitors from the beginning and saving yourself the hassle of having to deal with consumer-grade screens.
