How to Choose and Configure Marine LED Displays?

Posted on: May 5, 2011

ONTARIO, CANADA – Advancements in technology require builders and owners to give careful consideration to properly fit LED displays on the bridge, according to marine displays manufacturer Nauticomp Inc.

“While displays with mechanical controls and dials on the unit are still available, more yacht builders are moving to the clean look of compact, all-glass displays with external remote keypads to control the functions,” said Nauticomp Inc President Ryan Moore.

For new builds and refits, builders and owners are choosing all-glass displays, like the Nauticomp Glass Bridge® thin edge displays with Multi-Display Commander external remote controls (shown above).

However, beyond the look and feel, there are a number of other things to consider when choosing and configuring LED displays for the bridge. Nauticomp Inc has the following recommendations.

Choosing Marine Displays

• Determine which inputs will be required (computer, navnet system, cameras, television etc.).

• Determine the helm space available and how many display units you would require.

• Ambient lighting? The helm glass area in the pilothouse or open bridge application with bright colors surrounding the helm will dictate what brightness and contrast levels are required for the helm displays.

• Night Vision? If the vessel will be used at night, determine the dimming levels and features that will be require (typically dimming down to black is preferable). A dim-to-red screen feature is a bonus for the Captain that travels at night. It allows the user to keep brightness level a little higher without distracting the Captain’s forward vision.

• Equipment Redundancy? Ensure that all video sources are divided between the monitors on the helm; this way in the event of a failure, one of the other displays will show the pertinent information that will be require to navigate.

• Display mounting? Try to avoid mounting the unit on a flat (desk type) surface pointing straight up. The images are optimized when viewed straight on the display. Bonded Glass does improve side viewing angles substantially, but top and bottom angles are typically dependent on the type of LCD panel used in the display.

Configuring Marine Displays

• Does the display need to be waterproof for an exterior application? Typically all marine applications will endure salt and corrosion- waterproof displays are protected from these elements and will last longer.

• Source video resolutions? Check the resolution from your sources to ensure that the display will show the resolution that your source outputs.

• Cable routing? To ensure that the video cables will not be susceptible to AC noise or signal loss from long cable runs.

• Power requirements? Typically DC (12V or 24V) is preferred, on a constant power source.

Nauticomp Inc Demonstrates Display Waterproof Test @ Miami International Boat Show

Posted on: February 22, 2011

At the 2011 Miami International Boat Show (Electronics Room booth 1676, Miami Beach Convention Center, February 17-21), marine LED displays manufacturer Nauticomp Inc will immerse a functioning LED display in a tank of water to demonstrate the testing process the company uses to ensure every display leaving the factory is waterproof to Ingress Protection (IP) ratings high enough to withstand harsh conditions in the marine environment.

Watch Nauticomp Inc waterproof testing videos at: www.nauticomp.com/product-videos

“Ingress protection is the degree to which an electrical device can prevent itself from being invaded by solids or liquids,” said Nauticomp Inc President Ryan Moore. “Each IP rating has two numbers. The first number is a measure of how well the object can withstand invasion by solids, ranging from no special protection at all to protection against dust particles. The second number is a measure of how well it can withstand liquids, ranging from no special protection at all to watertight under water,” he added.

Nauticomp Displays are designed for and tested to a IP67 rating. The number 6 indicates the unit is completely protected from dust ingress and the number 7 that the unit is submersible to a depth of a meter for one minute. Internally-sealed welds on the all-aluminum housings ensure that the display casings are watertight. All cables and external connections to Nauticomp marine displays are manufactured to an IP68 rating and the second number – 8 – signifies that they are submersible to three meters for an infinite period of time.

During the display assembly process, a silicon sealant is applied at display and back case opening to ensure water tightness on the completed unit. Nauticomp displays also feature Bonded glass, which does not “fog” up when there is a significant change in temperatures. In addition, power supplies to Nauticomp displays are external – to keep the units cool and provide added safety in the event of a power surge.
